Like-minded people who don't think alike

Come as you are — no prior knowledge needed.

We say what we mean and mean what we say. We educate, not indoctrinate. Humanistic Judaism is non-theistic and secular — reason, science, and critical thinking take the place of prayer, and holidays are celebrated in their cultural context (Shabbat candles celebrate light and human effort, not commandment).

Founded 2001 · Part of the Society for Humanistic Judaism (30 congregations, 10,000+ members) · Movement founded 1963 by Rabbi Sherwin Wine.

Good questions

Asking, not memorizing.

Is this actually Jewish if there's no prayer?+

Yes. Humanistic Judaism is a recognized branch of Jewish life — culturally rich, historically deep, and completely secular. We celebrate the holidays, study the texts, learn the language, and take Jewish ethics seriously. Reason, science, and critical thinking take the place of prayer. Founded in 1963 by Rabbi Sherwin Wine, our movement now includes 30 congregations and more than 10,000 members through the Society for Humanistic Judaism.

Who is Kol Hadash Online for?+

Culturally Jewish, Just Jewish, Jew-ish, Jewish and…, Half-Jewish, Interfaith, Jews by Choice, Multicultural, LGBTQIA+, Not Religious, Secular, Humanistic, Atheist, Agnostic. Come as you are — no prior knowledge needed. We're like-minded people who don't think alike.

How do the live Zoom classes work?+

Live classes meet weekly on Zoom, taught by real teachers including Rabbi Adam Chalom, PhD. Youth classes are Sunday mornings during the fall, winter, and spring; adult classes run on weekday evenings. All timezones welcome — the schedule shows your local time.

Can we do B Mitzvah through the online program?+

Absolutely. Our humanistic B Mitzvah Journey combines individual Hebrew tutoring, a B Mitzvah Prep Class with Rabbi Chalom, one-on-one speech-writing sessions, a personalized Hebrew reading the student chooses, and a family-designed ceremony — wherever in the world you live.

We live near Chicago. Can we come in person too?+

Please do. Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation is based at 2100 Half Day Road in Deerfield, IL. Our current membership stretches across 33 Illinois towns and 9 states — you're welcome at in-person services, holidays, and community events any time.
